  • 216 women have died violently in Ireland since 1996
  • 56% of women murdered since 1996 were killed by a partner or ex
  • 1 in 5 women suffer domestic abuse
  • domestic abuse takes many forms including physical, emotional, sexual, financial
  • 60% of abuse starts before the age 25
  • 1 in 8 women are abused while pregnant
  • 41% of abused women experience stalking and harassment online
  • abuse increases mental and physical health risks

What is the 16 Days of Action?

The 16 Days Campaign Opposing Violence against Women is an important opportunity to raise awareness and call for changes at an international, national and local level to make women and children safe from abuse. (Women’s Aid)

This year, Women’s Aid’s theme for the 16 days of action is change the conversation.

Some of the ways you can get involved include:

  1. Wear a purple ribbon to remember lives lost to domestic violence and to stand in solidarity with women and children living with abuse.
  2. Take part in the nationwide moment of remembrance for women murdered in Ireland at 12.30pm, 24th November 2017. Incorporate this moment into your own activities at this time or at any other time during the 16 Days Campaign.

‘We the People’ for The Global Goals

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. (globalgoals.org)

In September of this year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a set of commitments during its first ever summit on large movements of refugees and migrants to enhance the protection of refugees and migrants. These commitments are known as the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants (NY Declaration) and you can read more about them here.
