Connections: Local, National and Global Issues Course

DDLETB Adult Education Service would like to thank Irish Aid for agreeing to co-fund The DEBATE Project for 2015-2016.  In the next year we will be offering courses and accredited modules in Local and Global Development to adult learners, producing resources and supports for FET tutors, delivering a Professional Certificate (QQI Level 6) to DDLETB tutors interested in integration and/or teaching about global issues and hosting a number of awareness-raising events throughout the year. Details of our first course of 2015/2016 are below:

Connections: Local, National and Global Issues

QQI: Level 4

The purpose of this module is to introduce learners to the concept of development at both a local and a global level. It is designed to increase learners’ knowledge and understanding of the developing world and of the links between their own lives and communities and that of people in the developing world.  It promotes an understanding of the possibilities for people to take positive action on development issues.

The specific learning outcomes for this module are grouped into 3 units:

Unit 1  Introducing Global Development

Unit 2  Communities near and far

Unit 3  Taking Action

Areas of exploration:

  • Human needs and human wants
  • Development needs and barriers in your own community and other communities
  • Inequality in Ireland and in the world
  • The main issues affecting the developing world
  • Exploring the links between us and other people /communities
  • Who holds power in Ireland and in the wider world?
  • What can we do to make communities and the world a better place to live?

 Issues include:

  • Gender
  • Debt
  • Racism
  • Trade
  • Colonialism and slavery
  • Modern slavery
  • Globalisation
  • Migration
  • Power
  • Action

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the concept of development and what it means for communities at both a local and a global level.
  • Explore some of the issues facing the developing world.
  • Examine some links between own context and that of the developing world.
  • Gain an insight into how we can promote development.



Group Project (40%): Taking an action as a group that is involved in global and local development issues.

Learner record (30%): A personal reflection on the learning

Individual Assignment (30%): Written and visual assessment linking local and global issues.


Venue: St. Kevin’s Family Resource Centre, Kilnamanagh, Tallaght, Dublin 24


Duration: The course will run on Wednesday evenings from 7pm-9pm for 24 weeks, starting on the 7th October and finishing in May 2016.

There is a maximum of 15 places on the course.


Completion of the course will lead to a qualification in Local and Global Development Awareness QQI Level 4.
